Went for a walk

Walked about 2km this morning. It is a start. Still experiencing pain but I could tolerate it for a very slow paced 30 minute walk. Pain pill prescription ran out yesterday so I'm going to try things out without them for a while. I've always been of that mindset that if I'm having a pain I want to feel it and know where its coming from and what movement is causing it. Plus the possible side effects aren't worth what seems like just a slight dulling of the pain. Bleeding stomach.... Um.. No thank you.

It felt good to get outside and move but still frustrating having to go at such a slow pace and all the while my back is talking to me as each foot steps down.

So I guess I will monitor if the walking is helping or hurting or doing nothing for my back pain and proceed accordingly. I've started doing a lot of stretching which I think is helping a little bit. I think getting the blood flowing through that injured area, which I believe is the muscles and pain receptors/nerves around my lower back, is helpful to getting things healed up quicker.

The doc says I have to keep moving it so that's what I'm trying to do.

  1. Does a hot shower/bath/hot tub help the pain at all? Sometimes that can loosen the muscles a little bit and be helpful, like stretching.

Keep up the good work and the positivity. I am glad you were not more seriously or permanently injured. Maybe this can be an opportunity to strengthen your back?

  2. The hot baths really do help. I have fallen asleep in the tub a few times just trying to relax. The effect is temporary. Once I'm out of the bath the back pain soon returns.

  4. Hang in there! It will get better. I know it seems like it takes forever, but it will eventually be gone. Sounds like you're doing all the right stuff!

  7. Well done on the walking - 2km is quite a distance, especially as a starting point. :o)

I'm a BIG fan of arnica gel for aches and pains, sore/pulled muscles, bruises - you name it, I'll use arnica gel on it. Worth a try and because it's natural, you can apply it as often as you like. My severely arthritic MIL has just started using it and is amazed by the relief she's getting from it.

Hope you have a great weekend!

  8. Good for you! I admire you for getting out there and toughing it out through the pain. You're smart to listen to your body and pay attention to what the walking is doing for you.

Are you doing static or dynamic stretches? Stretching cold muscles can lead to injury, so be careful about what kind of stretches you do. I want to say that dynamic stretches are fine for cold muscles, but stay away from the static ones!

    You're doing great, M. :)
